Communion Leader:
Take time to examine yourself and tell God your successes and failures this year, so far. Speak briefly about your fears and hopes to God.
You can Pray something along the lines of:
“God I confess that I have not had the right heart this year. As I face my fears I know I have taken advantage of your kindness. I have not taken as serious as I should the chances you have given me to honor and Serve you in the past. I looked at this year’s beginning and just assumed it would easy and uninspiring. I was wrong and now I see how something as small as a virus can stop the whole world in it’s tracks. I see how great my need is for you and how important that it is that I share your love to my family, friends and neighbors. I commit to teaching those in my life about you and recommit my children and my home to you. I will set a better example of worshiping you and teaching them of Christ and why we take communion as a family.”
Sharing communion with your family at home is easy. Feel free to sit around a table together or to stand and offer it to them.
You can use simple elements to represent the act and sacrifice of Christ on the Cross for the sins of those who will believe in Him as the Savior of their Souls. How in Christ sacrifice we are born again a new person destined for Heaven.
Christ used wine and bread. Common elements of that time on the table in the upper room when He and disciples were celebrating the festival of Passover.
We typically use Grape Juice and a bread of some kind that’s available. You can dip the bread one by one in the same cup or from the common cup pour into a cup for each person 1 ounce or so.
Take a cup or glass of some kind and fill it with Grape juice. (if you don’t have that, use something as similar as possible.)
If you can get a whole uncut loaf of bread and place it next to the cup of grape juice in the center of the table.
Have dinner first and at the end of dinner instead of a desert have communion.
(Also have a Christian song or hymn that you know and be prepared to sing it as a family at the end of communion. it’s okay to print out the words for everyone to sing along with. “Jesus Loves Me” works just fine.)
Read the scripture to your family. Anyone can read it.
Point to the Cup and Bread as they are mentioned in the scripture.
Start off with
“This is what Christ taught His disciples to do in remembering Him. We do this as family to remember what Christ did for us and as an expression of our love for Christ. As a family and as Believers.”
{Now read the scripture. }
26As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.”
27And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, 28for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. 29Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”
30Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Break the bread and say, “This was Christ body broken for you.” Offer each person present to take a pice of bread. Then from the common cup either allow every one each to dip their bread in the cup or pour a little bit into smaller cups individually.
Saying as you do, “This the blood of Christ that was poured out for the sins of the world. He did this for each of you.” Instruct the recipient to drink the juice.
When you are done sing your song.
Now sing your selected song. Ask everyone to take 3 mins (be patient because younger children probably can’t take that long, it will be a good time to help model the behavior so they they can see when it’s time. If you have to end it early that’s fine too.)
Sit somewhere in the same room but apart and think about how Christ was arrested after this happened and would later be killed on the cross. Remind everyone that He would die but we celebrate Easter because Christ would come back to life, He was Resurrected, and all who believe in Christ will be saved because of what Christ went through.
Offer a prayer of giving God Thanks for all that Christ went through. Something along the lines of:
“Dear God, WE know that Christ suffered for our sins so that we could have a right and lasting relationship with you. Thank You for how you always are there to rescue us from ourselves. For always showing us your love and guidance in all things. In Christ Name Amen.”
I suggest maybe planing a fun relaxing game of some kind. Tag in the yard or perhaps a small back yard fire. (if you can do so safely.) I remember making ice cream together. A simple, fun experience. Enjoy your evening.
